To recap, the head of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre writes how shameful it is that high-ranking Croatian priests hold midnight masses for the soul of Ante Pavelić, the shithead who ran the country while we were an Axis puppet state. In the comments to the article linked to above, there are two or three voices of reason but the rest is people going "Oh yeah? Well Tito was as bad a killer as Pavelić!" or "Oh yeah? How about we look at what Israel is doing to Palestine?"

Now I will state outright that I get fed up more often than not with terms like "derailing" but goddamn, way to be a cowardly, genocide-excusing, clumsily manipulative nitwit. When we talk about Croatia I do not give two shits about Israel or Palestine, but I do give fifteen thousand shits about Croatia, its own messed-up history and troubling present. This kind of fucked-up attitude is why we're not moving a goddamn inch as a nation and why the contracts we sign with the EU are done without genuine vision or will.

And yeah, Tito's deeds and legacy should damn well be impartially assessed, but none of that has anything to do with the crap that came before and that we still haven't cleaned up either. Who the fuck argues over how many thousand people died under which regime, which labour or concentration camp? If there were five, hell if there was one victim, that already deserves to be inspected and condemned. Just... how the fuck do you get to the point where these crimes are relative?

How?

So, Yuletide!

I am not all that thrilled with the new matching system, because for all that I was super delighted with my prompt I matched on the biggest fandom among my offers, and I kinda hoped to get to write for something genuinely obscure. But hey! I really did love my prompt and, as these things always go, wish RL had given me more time for it.

0X0A for DawningStar, who wanted Yori being awesome. (5005 words, gen)

Who the hell is Yori?

Ah. When Tron Legacy came out, it rekindled my love for the original (still a better and more beautiful film) and one day I will make a picture-heavy post explaining why I find it amazing even after all these years.

For now I'll just say that the premise of Tron is the ridiculous and fabulous idea that computer programs are sentient, self-aware AIs in their own right, and that it's possible to interact with them on their own level - inside the computer, as it were - through a laser originally created to store real-life objects as binary data.

Yori is the program that operates said laser, the work (and, within the computer, the mirror image) of Dr Lora Baines; neither of the two were reused as characters in Legacy which is an absolute crime, not least because the actress only became more stunning the older she got. (The link will also give you the Yuletide Madness ficlet I got. ♥)

So, I used this regrettable fact as the basis for my story: how would the events of Legacy have gone had Yori been present, and Tron (her canon partner, a security program; think antivirus/firewall combo, the system's chief of police) had somebody he could voice his concerns to - and who would listen?

Now, unlike my previous Yuletide fics which required next to no knowledge of canon, this one does rather rely on the reader being familiar with Tron Legacy, even if in broad terms. But if you are looking for female characters (I used Quorra too, as Yori's padawan instead of Flynn's) being in charge and being action heroines instead of romantic, I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

And now, to 2012!

I don't actually watch Burn Notice but this was written by a great friend of mine (who also recently sent me a box full of local noms and a shiny NASA mug for Mr Whatistigerbalm) and I proofread it for her and had a blast even if I'm totally new to the character of Maddie. So, while I am SUPER CHUFFED that this fic is already getting love on AO3 I must plug it some more:

Grocery Run by Anon

On an ordinary day, Madeline has a not-so-ordinary trip to the grocery store.

I GOT MODESTY BLAISE!

It's a perfect, perfect introduction to source material, with a caper done for fun, a drug ring cleared because that's what holidays are for if you're Modesty and Willie. It tells you how they feel about each other, why they work so well when they're on the job and off, and what makes them tick. It's a short and delicious piece of fic and if you ever wanted to give Modesty a go, you could do much, much worse than to start here.

Thank you again, mystery author! I will try to illustrate the opening scene later on. ♥

Yuletide achieved.

Misses Clause Challenge achieved.*

Now I sleep.

(* I should bloody well think so, anyway; they talk about a guy because their job is to extract this dumbass from a hostile situation, while getting chased and kicking ass and killing shit. If that don't qualify, then fuck it.)

YESSS a new Kate Griffin book! It'll be out, and in my hot little hands, in early March.

OK so I'm warming up to Matthew (I cared about the plot, the various societies, and about London more than the protag in the earlier books) but Penny is still my favourite and I can't wait to see what she'll get up to next. Actually, I love Penny so much that I think I only really started liking Matthew once the last book hinted at some (platonic? friendly?) flirting between the two, at the very end. Maybe the blue electric angels are humanising from the dredges of a dead guy's consciousness.

God, I love these books.
dillinger plotting something
It's not what I thought I'd get, but the prompt encapsulates a story I myself have wanted to read for ages now, had it plotted out in my head for a good while, but never got round to doing more than the outline. So I guess it's cosmic justice that I do get to write it in the end!

LET'S DO THIS

Hi! If you're here, that means you like at least one of the following -

* Modesty Blaise
* Sandokan
* Sledge Hammer!
* Tron

-- and I, in turn, like you!

I want to make this easy on you and have few constraints, but please feel free to contact me anon or via the regular channels if you think I'm not giving you enough to go by. So!

Things I really, really like: action/adventure, humour, and violence.

Things I'm neutral about: romance, either het or slash.

Things I'm really not into: non-con, and characters doubting themselves / angsting for ages on end.

In short, I'm in it for the optimism, confidence, and banter. I enjoy people beating the crap out of each other too (which is pretty obvious from my choice of fandoms) but the level of that last item is entirely up to you, and can freely be omitted. I prefer friendships to romantic 'ships - and gen above all - but as you will see from my signup letter I won't mind terribly if you weave some lovin' in.

Bottom line: as long as you have fun, I'm certain I will too. ♥

For reference, here's a copy of my signup sheet in alphabetic order:

Modesty Blaise (Peter O'Donell)
Modesty Blaise; Willie Garvin

I love the mixture of adventure, suspense, and humour in these books so if you could whip up a thrilling but light-hearted caper - or a segment or sketch of one - this fan would love you forever. Gen preferred, thank you! I love Modesty and Willie just as they are, and any other characters are up to you.

Sandokan - Emilio Salgari
Sandokan; Yanez de Gomera; Surama; Tremal-Naik

Oh man, dear writer, I'd love to see *any* fic written for these books so please, knock yourself out! But I will admit that I've had a crush on senhor de Gomera since I was a kid, and I love Surama just as much, so any adventure featuring the two of them will be appreciated - especially if Surama gets to kick some ass in her own way. Gen greatly preferred but not obligatory.

Sledge Hammer! (TV series)
Sledge Hammer; Dori Doreau; Gun; Captain Trunk

Same as for Sandokan - I don't think I've ever read fic for this so you have a carte blanche as far as I'm concerned. But if you do want guidelines then please amp the stuff that's already awesome about this series, the over the top violence and Sledge's attitude and the way his colleagues handle him. Ludicrous plots welcome! Gen preferred but not obligatory.

Tron (Movies)
Lora Baines; Alan Bradley; Edward Dillinger

To be perfectly honest, dear writer, I'll be happy with any and all fic that deals with '82 characters here and now (Legacy/post-Legacy era), especially Lora, but if you want specifics I would love to read something about the Baines-Bradleys having to deal with the Dillingers in protecting or rescuing Flynn's work yet again. Gen preferred but not obligatory.

I am ridiculously excited for Yuletide. The breadth of fandoms never ceases to astound me - 19th Century Civic Allegory? Individual adverts? Famous British messageboards? Amazing. The Red Violin? Byzantine History RPF? UNF. I hope something gets written for these.

I also hope that people request the latest instalment of Assassin's Creed even though it came out after the signups (here, anyway) because Yusuf is a wonderful new character. On a thoroughly different note tho', why is Jack Hawksmoor not a nominated Authority character. Why no Jack love, fandom? The guy talks to cities.

No Matthew Swift books this year. Damn. Shoulda coordinated this better with other fans. Same goes for The Saint (books, not adaptations). I'll nominate them next year with Zorro and Beetlejuice if no-one else does. And Max Headroom. ♥

Finally, whoever nominated the music video for Woodkid's Iron as a fandom is a mofoing genius. Also the Barber of Siberia! *fistpump*

Here's a randomly ordered list of what I'm interested in wrt offers and requests:

* Portal - it has Cave Johnson as an eligible character. This must happen.
* Apocalypto - because Zero Wolf is the most badass name in history.
* Chew - my favourite among recent comic discoveries.
* Geofrey Chaucer Hath A Blog - might request this because it is loltastic.
* La Grande Illusion - never thought ot it as a fandom source until now.
* Sandokan - I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO NOMINATED THIS. \o/ Hope I'm not the only one who offers/requests too.
* The Seventh Seal - ahhhh fffuuuu so tempted! Soooo tempted! Medieval atheism!
* Sledge Hammer! - yes, the maniacal cop show. I love it SFM.
* Ted & Ralph - d'awwwwwwwwww.
* Things Fall Apart - if I were confident I could do it a shred of justice, I'd offer.
* Frasier - marathoned the entire series a month or so ago, still pumped for it.
* Keen Eddie - somebody nominated Keen Eddie! Keen Eddie, you guys!
* Tremors - this speaks to the gore fan in me.
* Twin Peaks - oh hell yes. Yes. My first ever full-blown fandom.
* Dark City - aaaaaaaaaahhhhh goddd this is one of my favourite films everrrrrrrr. Cannot resist!
* Ravenous - I'll request this if no-one else does. Someone must.
* Tron - there's... not really a question here. The fandom has pretty much eaten my soul.
* Asterix - I told myself I'd drop it this year because I'm not convinced anyone can write it as funny as Goscinny, but it's my #1 fandom of all time. WAT DO.
* Brother Cadfael - I mainlined a good chunk of the series (books, not TV) not too long ago, and do want, oh how much do I want.
* Modesty Blaise - always, always, always.

So that's a... pretty long list. I'll have to do some thorough thinking in the hours left before the signups open. Hnn.

Do we share any fandoms, flist?

Look at this:

Mitchy: Modesty Blaise - Peter O'Donnell, Gen, Mature, http://mitchy.livejournal.com/2010/11/20/

Lempo Soi (Lemposoi): Modesty Blaise - Peter O'Donnell, Modesty Blaise, Gerald Tarrant, Willie Garvin, Male-Female Friendship, Gen, http://lemposoi.dreamwidth.org I'd love a clever little adventure or anything that delves into Modesty's past, or even just a story about adventure downtime, or a psychological character portrait. Please no Modesty/Willie. I love their relationship just the way it is. I also kind of like Modesty not being all that interested in romance when there's drug cartel busting and shark-wrestling to do.

Angie13: Modesty Blaise - Peter O'Donnell, Modesty Blaise, Willie Garvin, F/M, Explicit, http://mindsplinters.dreamwidth.org/ If you're writing this, you already know how it ends... I would rather not see that in this story (no character death). Something witty, caper-y, and really showcasing the relationship between Modesty and Willie. Gen or romance, I don't care.

whatistigerbalm: Modesty Blaise - Peter O'Donnell, Modesty Blaise, Willie Garvin, Gerald Tarrant, Action/Adventure, Gen, General Audiences, http://whatistigerbalm.dreamwidth.org/63938.html

Modesty needs more love, internet.

HELLO ORIGINAL TRON, MODESTY BLAISE, AND SANDOKAN.

ALL ELIGIBLE

Right. I've not been around much lately and I owe people replies, but I hope to fix this soon. I hope everyone is well!

On the bus two days ago I saw somebody reading The Dragonriders of Pern. Two thoughts arose in my head at the same time.

Oh man, I love these books! They take me back to my childhood when my dad got me into sci-fi and told me of all these books to read and then when he told me about Anne McCaffrey and I read the Pern books we talked about dragons on the ferry ride to Grandma's and I'd draw all sorts of dragons and it was the best time ever. And maaan I still have fuzzy warm feelings about the characters, human and dragon both, and this totally got me into drawing fantasy landscapes too. Ahh, nostalgia! ♥ I should probably reread them.
